1st Day: Palermo
Arrival at Palermo airport and transfer to the hotel
In the afternoon, guided walking tour of the places of the economic history of the famous Florio family: Piazza Ignazio Florio, the Oretea Foundry, the Cala marina, Via Materassai, the Church of San Domenico (external), Teatro Massimo (external).
Dinner in a typical restaurant.
2nd day Palermo
Breakfast at the hotel and visit to the Villino Florio in Olivuzza,
one of the greatest masterpieces of Art Nouveau in Europe. We will continue with a visit to Villa Malfitano, the Whitaker family's building, which has kept its precious furnishings and its beautiful park intact. A fundamental chapter in the history of Sicily was the presence of English entrepreneurs who started high-level commercial activities, including Ingham and Whitaker who had a solid bond of friendship with the Florios.
In the afternoon we will visit the Palazzina dei 4 Pizzi, a neo-Gothic quadrangular building, so called due to the four spiers that dominate it.
Located in the Tonnara dell'Arenella complex, the tuna factory was purchased in 1830 by Vincenzo Florio who built his summer residence there.
3th Day: Marsala
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the island of Mozia, where we find the most interesting and extensive Sicilian Phoenician remains. The island was purchased by Joseph Whitaker at the end of the 19th century, an archeology enthusiast, who brought to light the presence of the ancient Phoenician colony. Along the coast we will admire a splendid landscape of glittering salt pans and ancient windmills.
Lunch in a typical restaurant to taste fish couscous.
In the afternoon visit with wine tasting in the Florio Historic Cellar.
The famous Marsala wine owes its fortune to Vincenzo Florio who enhanced its peculiarities and guessed the right marketing in the world.
4th Day: Favignana
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the port of Trapani, departure by hydrofoil for the island of Favignana, the largest of the Egadi islands. Purchased by the Florio family in 1874 to acquire fishing rights and begin tuna processing. To the Florios
Thanks to the Florios, the idea of canned tuna was born which revolutionized the trade. We will visit the former Tonnara Florio factory, one of the most prestigious examples of industrial archeology in Sicily.
5th day Scopello
Breakfast at the hotel. Panoramic tour along one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in Sicily, from Castellammare del Golfo to Scopello. We will admire the Tonnara di Scopello with its splendid stacks and guided tour of the monumental complex of the Tonnara di Scopello, one of the most important and ancient in Sicily; it was built in the 13th century and subsequently enlarged by the Sanclemente family, subsequently passed to the Society of Jesus and finally to the Florio family. We continue with a walk in the small village of Scopello, a typical "Baglio Siciliano" from the Borboni era. Transfer to the airport.
